It’s would be nearly impossible to provide an all-inclusive
list of the recreational opportunities in the Mahaska Community.
We do, however, boast access to sports facilities, natural resources,
music, theater groups, and events through civic organizations catering
to the entire family … that’s just the beginning.
- Hunting enthusiasts from all over the United States visit Mahaska
County to hunt pheasants, quail, turkey, and deer in the area’s
wooded, rolling hills.
- Lake Keomah State Park is an 83-acre lake and park providing
boating, camping, hiking, fishing and picnicking. Edmundson Park
in Oskaloosa provides a serene setting for play, reading, lunches,
picnicking, a pond for fishing, a frisbe golf course, and a magnificent
wooden playground. There are numerous public parks scattered throughout
the Mahaska Community.
- Golfers have several course choices when considering a round
of golf: Edmundson, Harvest Point, Oskaloosa Golf (Open To The Public), or Prairie Knolls.
There’s also a mini-putt course and a driving range.
- The George Daily Community Auditorium, an exquisite facility
which opened in 1997, has state- of the art sound and lighting
systems with a seating capacity of 700. Scheduling not only includes
local entertainment (Oskaloosa Community Theater, Community Chorus,
Oskaloosa Symphony, high school and college choirs) but is also
proud to have held such concerts as the “Nutcracker Ballet,”
performances by Bobby Vee, Simon Estes, Comedy Central …
each season is a delight!
- The Mahaska Community has even more! A recreation trail, swimming
pools, tennis courts, Y Community Center, Off Road Vehicle trails,
an historic Carnegie Public Library and libraries at the colleges,
a senior center, roller skating, and even a Lighted Christmas
Parade which has been held through snow and ice – awarded
Main Street Iowa’s “Number #1 Holiday Event”
in the entire state.
